Contested Identities

The images in this body of work seek to explore theses changes as well as our near futile efforts to freeze what we often call tradition. The photographer here presents us portraits that capture participants in a traditional religious festival, most times with the subjects centrally positioned, reminiscent of the historic African wood sculptures. The participants themselves are mostly professionals who reside in modern cities with over 9 million inhabitants. These people arrive the traditional space carrying with them traits of modernism images of tradition festivals and religious rituals.
